When summer rolls into Iowa, the entire state comes alive with energy, color, and endless opportunities for adventure. Whether you're looking to explore the great outdoors, soak up local culture, or simply find something fun (and affordable!) to do, Iowa has something for everyone. 
From vibrant festivals and bustling farmers markets to scenic parks and thrilling attractions, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of the season and many of them are completely free!
Explore Iowa’s Natural Beauty:
Did you know Iowa is home to 63 state parks? Each one offers its own unique landscape, giving you the chance to experience a wide variety of natural beauty across the state. Hiking big trails and small, fishing, camping, cabins, history - there is something for everyone.
Northeast Iowa feels like a hidden treasure, filled with dramatic bluffs, winding rivers, and even caves. A few must-visit spots include:
- Decorah area (Fan fave! So much to do in the Driftless Region!)
- Maquoketa Caves State Park
- Mines of Spain (Dubuque)
- Pikes Peak State Park
- Backbone State Park (Iowa's first state park!)
Eastern/East Central Iowa gives us two more fan favorites - Palisades Keppler State Park and Wildcat Den State Park. Both hold historic and natural treasures and are perfect for that selfie or photo opp!
Central Iowa has its own surprises, including the stunning Ledges State Park, known for its sandstone cliffs and scenic trails. You can also explore these other county, state, and federal properties:
- Jester Park
- Elk Rock State Park
- Dolliver Memorial State Park
- Rock Creek State Park
- Saylorville Lake and Lake Red Rock (walk or bike the Volksweg Trail or climb the tower at Cordova Observation Tower - you can see the Principal Building in Des Moines on a clear day!)
For a truly unique experience, head to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City, where you might have a "herd experience" as the bison and/or elk cross the road! Walk the paved 2 mile Tallgrass Trail for another perspective and/or the shorter Oak Savanna trail. You can do an auto tour, too.
Western/Northwest Iowa offer something completely different with the Loess Hills, a rare landform found in only a few places in the world. Take a scenic drive or hike up to Vista Point for breathtaking views you won’t forget. Travel up the Missouri to Stone State Park near Sioux City, popular for hiking and mountain biking.
Southeast Iowa will take you on rolling hills to beautiful Lacey Keosauqua State Park. Camp at the park or stay at the historic Hotel Manning, then enjoy a drive and shopping in the Villages of Van Buren County.
Southwest Iowa has several state parks that offer great boating, hiking, and fishing, such as Lake of Three Fires and Green Valley State Park. Hiking is good at Nine Eagles State Park, too!

Summer in Iowa wouldn’t be complete without its festivals and there are a lot of them. In fact, Iowa hosts over 625 festivals throughout the season!

- Countless local town celebrations
And let’s not forget Iowa’s legendary fair scene. With 106 county fairs, there’s always one happening nearby. These events celebrate community spirit, featuring:

Then there’s the grand finale of summer: the Iowa State Fair. Drawing visitors from across the country, it’s a must-experience event with everything from iconic fair food to major entertainment. 2024 was its record year welcoming 1.18 million attendees!
