Thinking about transferring? Not sure where to start? Our Transfer Committee Chair Rachelle Setsodi, who is also the Associate Director of Transfer
Admission at Drake University, has these terrific transfer tips for students and the advisors working with them.
Four things to know or ask when contemplating a transfer:
- What are your transfer scholarships?
- Does your transfer school offer transfer scholarships? Are they guaranteed for full-time students? Yes and yes for Drake University!
- What grade do I need to earn to transfer credit?
- Institutions have different policies, so be sure to find out the grade level of potential transfer schools. Drake University requires a C- or higher grade.
- What do I need to know to make a well-informed transfer school decision?
- Cost - This includes filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.edu to learn need based aid. Institutions use this along with any scholarships to process your financial aid package. I recommend talking with your admission counselor and financial aid office staff to thoroughly review your aid.
- Credit & Completion - Will my courses transfer? How will they transfer? How long to complete my degree? When transfer planning and researching possible schools, be sure to find out if your credits will transfer and count towards your total hours AND what the applicability is to general education and program requirements. You need to know both transferability and applicability. At Drake University, all admitted students meet with the Transfer Advisor to learn all these details.
- When to contact schools?
- It is never too early to reach out to 4-year school institution transfer admission staff. They are there to help you along your transfer journey answering questions and giving transfer guidance. Use the Iowa ACAC transfer resources website for more tips and school links.
