How One Conference Reignited My Work in Admissions

Attending the MIDWest Conference in Wisconsin was an experience that reminded me why professional development opportunities are so important in admissions counseling. Between the sessions I was able to enjoy networking opportunities and time to connect with other counselors I see on the road. I was also able to spend time reflecting on my career and new ways to keep it interesting. Following the conference, I left feeling energized, inspired, and excited to bring new ideas back to campus! Here are just a few of the many reasons why I would encourage others to attend a future conference.

1. New Strategies

A major benefit of attending the conference was leaving with practical ideas that could immediately be applied to my work. I was able to enjoy sessions that focused on topics that are incredibly relevant to today’s students. I brushed up on better ways to communicate with Gen Z, and how to approach Gen Alpha as we begin to work with a new generation of students. The sessions helped spark new ideas, which I immediately took back to the office to try out. I was shocked by how well the strategies worked out and I was able to connect with over 50 students that I otherwise may not have reached.

2. Building Connections and Networking

One of the most valuable parts of the conference was the opportunity to connect with other high school counselors, admissions counselors, and professionals from across the Midwest. Admissions work can sometimes feel isolating because every institution faces unique challenges, but conferences like this remind you that many professionals are navigating similar situations and you’re not alone. It was encouraging to exchange ideas, ask questions, and build relationships with people who understand the work we do every day. It was also so much fun reconnecting with those I see out on the road. Shoutout to the social event that was hosted at the Madison Children’s Museum, which was a great opportunity to relax and unwind while reconnecting!

3. Finding Inspiration

One of the biggest takeaways from the conference was how rejuvenating it felt to step away from daily responsibilities and focus on growth and reflection. Dr. Christine Whelan’s keynote presentation, “Choosing Purpose in College and Admission Counseling,” especially resonated with me. Her message encouraged attendees to reflect on their own purpose, not just the purpose we help students discover every day.

It was a powerful reminder that admissions counseling is meaningful work, and taking time to invest in ourselves as professionals ultimately helps us better serve our students and institutions.

Overall, attending the MIDWest Conference was an incredibly rewarding experience. I returned with new ideas, stronger professional connections, and a renewed sense of motivation. Admissions can be challenging, but having this opportunity to reconnect allowed me to remember the reasons I chose admissions and how my work makes a difference.  Opportunities like this are valuable not only for professional development, but also for personal growth, inspiration, and connection. I am grateful for the opportunity to attend and would highly encourage others to consider participating in future conferences!
